In Mitten des fast 200 jährigen Baumbestandes steht eine Skulptur, welche die Flexibilität und Fortschrittlichkeit des Baustoffes Holz ins Zentrum stellt. Beim Begehen und Umlaufen der dreidimensionalen, unendlichen Schlaufe eröffnen sich verschiedene Perspektiven auf die Skulptur und in den Park. «Infinity» ist eine gebaute Aufforderung für ein Denken und Handeln in Kreisläufen.
In Kollaboration mit Hector Egger Holzbau, – einem der spannendsten Hightech-Holzbauunternehmen der Schweiz mit über 170 Jahren Firmengeschichte –, hat Ortreport eine ambitionierte Form entworfen und realisiert.
Im Planungsprozess forschten die Holzbauexperten im Bernischen Langenthal und Ortreport aus Zürich im regen Austausch an den Konstruktions- und Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten des Projekts. Das Know-how des Familienunternehmens traf auf ein städtisches Szenografieverständnis.
Angetrieben von der gemeinsamen Lust den Besuchenden ein räumliches Erlebnis zu bieten, loteten sie mit dieser Installation die Möglichkeiten der Schnittstellen zwischen Mensch und Maschine aus. Da die Schlaufe ohne Träger realisiert werden sollte, musste statisch wie bei einer Brücke gedacht werden. Mit einem speziellen Programm wurde die Tragfähigkeit anhand der dreidimensionalen CAD-Daten kontrolliert. Die Kurven wurden in Segmente aufgeteilt und die einzelnen Teile mit Hilfe einer Abbundmaschine (Hundegger Robot Drive) in Lastwagengrösse vorfabriziert. So kann die nomadische Struktur innert einem knappen Tag aufgebaut werden. Aluminiumteile – sogenannte Sherpa Holzverbinder – ermöglichen eine schnelle Fügung der bis zu 2 Tonnen schweren Elemente.
«Infinity» ist vollständig aus Fichtenholz von nachhaltig bewirtschafteten Wäldern produziert. Nach den Auftritten an verschiedenen Standorten wird die Skulptur zurück in die Produktion von Hector Egger Holzbau gebracht und Teile davon werden im Hochbau wiederverwendet. Das Restholz wird der Schnitzelheizung zur Produktion von Heizwärme zugeführt.

In the middle of the almost 200-year-old tree population stands a sculpture that focuses on the flexibility and progressiveness of wood as a building material. Walking on and around the three-dimensional, infinite loop opens up various perspectives on the sculpture and in the park. “Infinity” is a built invitation to think and act in cycles.
In collaboration with Hector Egger Holzbau, - one of the most exciting high-tech timber construction companies in Switzerland with over 170 years of company history - Ortreport designed and realized an ambitious form.
During the planning process, the timber construction experts in Langenthal, Bern, and Ortreport from Zurich engaged in a lively exchange of research on the construction and expression possibilities of the project. The know-how of the family business met an urban understanding of scenography.
Driven by the common desire to offer visitors a spatial experience, they explored the possibilities of the interfaces between man and machine with this installation. Since the loop was to be realized without a beam, it was necessary to think statically, as in the case of a bridge. A special program was used to check the load-bearing capacity based on the three-dimensional CAD data. The curves were divided into segments and the individual parts were prefabricated in truck size using a joinery machine (Hundegger Robot Drive). In this way, the nomadic structure can be erected within just one day. Aluminum parts - so-called Sherpa wood connectors - allow for quick joining of the elements, which weigh up to 2 tons.
“Infinity” is produced entirely from spruce wood from sustainably managed forests. After performances at various locations, the sculpture will be returned to Hector Egger Holzbau's production facility and parts of it will be reused in building construction. The residual wood is fed into the woodchip heating system for the production of heating energy.

Gemäss Definition ist eine Treppe eine bauliche Massnahme, um zwei unterschiedliche Ebenen miteinander zu verbinden. Somit ist «Infinity» gar keine Treppe sondern eine endlose Schlaufe, die nirgendwo hinführt – und das ist der Reiz dieser Skulptur. «Infinity» verkörpert den Designprozess exemplarisch als Anschauungsbeispiel der heutigen Fabrikationsmöglichkeiten, mittels CNC und robotergesteuerten Prozessen. In der vermeintlich archaischen Holzindustrie haben sie längst Einzug gehalten: präzise, vorfabriziert, nachhaltig. Das Projekt zeigt eindrücklich, wozu Holz als Konstruktionsmaterial fähig ist und welche statisch anspruchsvollen Bauteile realisiert werden können.
Ich wünsche mir, dass dieser vielseitige und nachwachsende Rohstoff in Zukunft noch viel häufiger herausgefordert wird. (Gabriela Chicherio)

By definition, a staircase is a structural measure to connect two different levels. Thus, "Infinity" is not a staircase at all, but an endless loop that leads nowhere - and that is the appeal of this sculpture. "Infinity" exemplifies the design process as a visual example of today's fabrication possibilities, by means of CNC and robotic processes. They have long since found their way into the supposedly archaic wood industry: precise, prefabricated, sustainable. The project impressively shows what wood is capable of as a construction material and what structurally demanding components are possible to realize.
I wish that this versatile and renewable raw material will be challenged much more often in the future. (Gabriela Chicherio)
