IN/OUT - NULLSERIE
IN/OUT
NULLSERIE
Two installations, differing only in the position of the light source, create a SHIFT that visitors experience individually upon entering the two spaces. In addition to light and its reflection, different colors and sounds contribute to a change in perception.
Light is a phenomenon that accompanies and influences us every day. It provides us with the ability to perceive the world around us and plays a crucial role in our well-being. The color spectrum of light influences our moods and emotions, while brightness provides us with a sense of security and orientation.
Descending into the casemates of the old botanical garden, one must first acclimate to the darkness. The two interconnected chambers, part of the Zurich city fortifications, receive little to no natural daylight. Consequently, light becomes the central element of the “IN/OUT” installation. In one room, the light is directed onto a mirror hanging on the wall, leaving the room in darkness. In the other room, light emerges from behind the mirror, illuminating the space.
Designer Mika Schell achieves two distinct perceptions of space using the same elements. As visitors move through the installation, accompanied by changing light colors and music, their perception of the environment shifts, evoking various emotions. Through simple, everyday means, our perception is manipulated, with light playing an essential role.

Curators’ Comment
Light and fire are among the most significant phenomena for all cultures. The design of light as an atmospheric element, as well as luminaires and lamps, has challenged designers throughout history.
For years, Mika Schell has been involved as a light artist. For the Design Biennale Zurich, he has developed a tailored project for the historic cellar vaults of the Kasematte. Two rooms, two lighting situations. Mika modifies the mystical tranquility, coolness, and darkness of the location with light and music, skillfully manipulating our spatial perception. The atmospheric installation brings us closer to the phenomenon of light and its impact on spaces and ourselves. (Gabriela Chicherio)
