Das Völkerkundemuseum lädt im Rahmen der Design Biennale Zürich mit zwei ethnografischen Kurzfilmen dazu ein, Gegenentwürfe zur Massenproduktion zu erkunden. Handwerk, Nachhaltigkeit und Regionalität – die langsame Erschaffung von Objekten – kontrastieren mit den heute üblichen industriellen Produktionsprozessen.
Die japanische Künstlerin Eiko Soga befasst sich in Autumn Salmon mit der Herstellung eines Schuhs aus Lachsleder wie ihn die Ainu auf Hokkaido geübt anfertigen. Auf einer ethnografischen Reise in ihre Heimat Japan lernte sie das Handwerk selbst. In schlichten Filmsequenzen, die tagebuchartig mit Text unterlegt sind, zeigt Soga, wie man von Lachs zu Schuh gelangt. Dabei erfasst sie nicht nur jeden Produktionsschritt, sondern setzt sich auch mit dem kolonialen Erbe Japans, der Zwangsassimilation der Ainu, dem Verlust von traditionellem Handwerk und der Industrialisierung auseinander. Autumn Salmon ist ein Aufruf zu Nachhaltigkeit und zu einem respektvollen Umgang mit der Umwelt.
In A Chair in Six Parts porträtiert die Ethnologin Anna Grimshaw Bill Coperthwaite, der in den 1960er Jahren 300 Hektar Wildnis in Machiasport, Maine, kaufte und bis zu seinem Tode 2013 dort hauste. Beeinflusst von der Poesie Emily Dickinsons und von der "Back to the land"-Bewegung von Scott und Helen Nearing, widmete sich Bill Coperthwaite dem, was er "ein handgemachtes Leben" nannte. Er lebte im Wald, baute Jurten und fertigte in seiner offenen Werkstatt Löffel, Schalen und Stühle. In ihrem einfühlsamen Porträt eines Stuhls und seines Machers geht Grimshaw den subtilen Stimmungswechseln von Coperthwaite nach, während dieser die Materialien seiner Umgebung erforscht. A Chair in Six Parts regt an zum Nachdenken über Zeit und Prozess, Rhythmus und Bewegung, und über die Poesie des Verweilens in der Welt.

As part of the Design Biennale Zurich, the Ethnographic Museum invites you to explore counter-designs to mass production with two ethnographic short films. Craftsmanship, sustainability and regionality - the slow creation of objects - contrast with the industrial production processes common today.
In Autumn Salmon, Japanese artist Eiko Soga explores the making of a salmon leather shoe practised by the Ainu people of Hokkaido. She learned the craft herself on an ethnographic journey to her native Japan. In simple film sequences, which are underlaid with text like a diary, Soga shows how salmon is turned into shoes. In the process, not only does she capture every step of production, but she also deals with Japan's colonial heritage, the forced assimilation of the Ainu, the loss of traditional craftsmanship and industrialisation. Autumn Salmon is a call for sustainability and a respectful approach to the environment.
In A Chair in Six Parts, ethnologist Anna Grimshaw portrays Bill Coperthwaite, who bought 300 acres of wilderness in Machiasport, Maine, in the 1960s and lived there until his death in 2013. Influenced by the poetry of Emily Dickinson and the "back to the land" movement of Scott and Helen Nearing, Bill Coperthwaite devoted himself to what he called "a handmade life". He lived in the forest, built yurts and made spoons, bowls and chairs in his open workshop. In her perceptive portrait of a chair and its maker, Grimshaw traces Coperthwaite's subtle shifts in mood as he explores the materials of his environment. A Chair in Six Parts encourages reflection on time and process, rhythm and movement, and the poetry of lingering in the world.
